Thus, I did a treeSearch to locate William Crawford in my online tree. Since I have this family line in my primary RootsMagic 7 file, I also have them in my Ancestry tree, Heartland Genealogy. Thus, I elected to work with William Crawford, son of James Crawford and Nancy Sawyers and great-grandson of Alexander and Mary McPheeters. Thinking that the easiest way to create these citations would be to find an individual that already had citations for census records. So, my first step was to create some ‘Free Form’ citations. Since it is a ‘duplicate’ set of information, I’m comfortable experimenting with the file. I’m not sure why I have this file since this family is in my primary file. In that search, I found a McPheeters file which contains the descendants of Alexander Crawford and his wife, Mary McPheeters. Since I still don’t want to work with my primary file, I searched my RootsMagic folder for an ‘older’ file that I could use for the import. Impact of RM7 to RM8 import on source citations.Impact of RM7 to RM8 import on free form citations.Import of a RM7 file into RootsMagic 8 preview version. Thus, I decided to do some more experimenting to test the following: Prior to today, most of my experimentation in RM8 has been with files whose creation goes back to the exporting of portions of my RM 7 file via a gedcom file and then the importing of that file into RootsMagic to create a new, smaller database. Thus, I don’t want to do anything that might jeopardize the link between my RootsMagic file and my Ancestry tree. Since indexing not only impacts the web hints but also DNA ThruLines, I do not wish to go thru that process again. My current Ancestry tree took about six months to get indexed by Ancestry. No, because I tried importing a copy of my RootsMagic 7 file in the early days of the preview and it was linked via TreeShare to my Ancestry tree. No, because my citations are based on the templates and not free form.My initial response was going to be ‘no.’ Record repositories where the sources are found Create your own source templates using the. One question – have you tried importing info into RM8 yet to see if the source citations move over correctly – especially if you have used the free form template? Add a global source to each person when importing a GEDCOM file. Renaming Collections is not advised, as it breaks the link between Templates and their Definitions. After sharing my experiences with RootsMagic source templates and how I name sources, a reader asked about my experiences importing data into RootsMagic 8. Have a look at your original data again, and see if it makes sense in these terms. AFAIK, it does not have an equivalent to the Collection. RM treats this slightly differently, and manages Source Templates individually. It takes a while to get your head around this, and it is one of the more complex features of FH7. If you run the plugin again, it will recreate the RootsMagic Import collection. The Collection is now called RootsMagic Template Import, but the Templates are still linked to RootsMagic Import. By changing the name of the Collection, you have broken the links between the Templates and the Definitions. When you change the Template for a Source, you are changing the Template, not the Definition. However, you cannot easily use the Templates in other Projects without the associated Definitions, and this is what the plugin creates. If you only have one Project, that doesn't matter. When you import a project from RM, you are importing the Sources and Source Templates, but not the Source Template Definitions. These reside in individual Projects, and provide the template for individual sources in that Project.įinally, there are the Sources themselves. A "Collection" is simply a group of Definitions collected together in a single file. Definitions are not generally associated with individual Projects, but sit at the system level and are available to all Projects. This defines what the template looks like, and ensures that similar templates in different projects are structured in the same way. Think of it as a three level hierarchy.Īt the top is the Source Template Definition. I think you are getting confused between a Source Template and Source Template Definition.
